Luis Figueroa starts his day by meeting with his team before heading out to walk around the office and check-in with employees to ensure their computers and systems applications are working. "One of the best parts about this job is getting to know employees across all divisions and see that they're happy with our service and can continue their work without a problem." It's this positive attitude and approachable nature that makes employees feel comfortable requesting help from IT. It's also why Luis received the 2019 Employee of the Year Award.
Originally from San Luis Sonora, Mexico, Luis joined the Maricopa County Attorney's Office four years ago as an entry-level IT technician. After completing his bachelor's and master's in Information Systems in Phoenix, Luis worked in the private industry before looking for other career opportunities to grow professionally and serve his community. Since joining the office, Luis has been promoted two times and currently serves in a leadership role as the PC Support Supervisor. For Luis, working at MCAO has allowed him to gain professional experience in his field and continue his education; he is currently completing a second master's program in Management Systems. "I never thought I would have the opportunity to grow as much as I have professionally, I’m happy and proud of my work."
Luis credits his manager, director, and team members for the great experience in the office so far. " Everyone here has treated me with respect and kindness. They are all great to work with, and we have an environment of support within our team."
He also credits his family and wife for their support in helping him advance in his career. "In Hispanic culture, family is really important, and I wouldn't be here today if it weren't for the support I received from my parents and wife, and their encouragement to continue my education." In reflecting on what Hispanic Heritage Month means to him, Luis shares that he's proud of his culture and where he comes from and is happy to share that with others. “I encourage our Hispanic youth to focus on their education and goals, anything is possible with discipline, dedication and perseverance.”
For those thinking about a career in public service and IT, Luis shares that hard work, determination, and good mentors make a difference. "I'm impressed by their expertise, and it motivates me to continue learning."
MCAO is grateful for the contributions and dedication of Luis, his team, and everyone in the IT Office that help make sure all of our 1,000 employees can get their work done every day.
