Staying Safe Online While Teleworking

Working From Home

To protect their own health and that of their coworkers, more and more employees are being asked to work from home. While working from home can be comfortable, it can create a number of cyber security issues for both employees and employers. As you adjust to your work routine at home consider implementing the following tips for a safer online experience.

Do you have the appropriate security to keep your personal information and work data safe? While accessing files online or from a company server seems easy, it just takes one click to introduce malware into your device and compromise your information. Practice the following to ensure your information stays safe:

  • Use an encrypted internet connection to ensure the information you’re sharing and receiving isn’t accessible to others on the same internet connection
  • For sensitive information consider using a hot spot in which you are the only user on that internet connection
  • If available, use a virtual private network (VPN) to establish a direct connection to your office network; make sure the VPN can handle excess bandwidth to prevent a lapse in connectivity
  • Make sure all your work devices have an up to date firewall and check it’s functionality frequently by scanning your device
  • Have your IT contact information on hand and reach out to them immediately if you think your device has been compromised

Remember if you’re online, you’re vulnerable to cyber attacks. Set reminders before you start work to check your internet connection, firewall, and VPN access.
