PHOENIX— Luis Alberto Madrigal (D.O.B. 10-01-1990) was sentenced today to 20 years in the Department of Corrections after pleading guilty to 2nd Degree Murder for killing his girlfriend, 27-year-old Monique-Antwane Gemino, who was also the mother of his child.
“Today’s sentencing can do no more than express our outrage as a community at the senseless loss of a young mother and the void left for her child,” said Maricopa County Attorney Bill Montgomery.
On July 7, 2018 the defendant went to the victim’s work to get some items from her vehicle. While speaking with Gemino, the defendant confronted her about his suspicion that she was dating another man. The conversation became heated and the defendant took a metal object from the back of the car and attacked Gemino, causing severe trauma to her body that led to her death.
The defendant approached a person in the parking lot and asked them to call 911 admitting he had attacked Gemino. The defendant also scratched the word “cheater” into the victim’s car, later telling police he wanted them to know the reason for the attack. When officers first arrived at the scene the defendant refused commands to drop his weapon. He later stated to investigators he was hoping to force the officers to kill him.
