PHOENIX— Jose Orellana-Ruiz (D.O.B. 06-19-1989) was sentenced today to 27 years flat in the Department of Corrections after pleading guilty to 2nd Degree Murder for injuring and killing his three-month-old daughter.
“Adrianna Gutierrez deserved more from the man who was her father. Instead of the love, encouragement, and support she should have received over the course of her life, her life was senselessly ended,” said Maricopa County Attorney Bill Montgomery. “While 27 years cannot restore Adrianna's life, it is a clear demonstration that the defendant has a price to pay.”
On February 26, 2017 the defendant asked the victim’s mother to bring the child over for a visit. After he was with the baby for a few hours, he asked if he could keep her overnight. During that night the defendant woke his family because the infant became unconscious and was barely breathing. She was taken to a nearby hospital where she died three days later after suffering serious brain injuries.
Initially the defendant told investigators that his daughter’s injuries were caused by a fall while he was holding her. However, he eventually admitted that his daughter kept crying during the night while he trying to sleep and out of anger he threw the three-month-old against a headboard and threw a baby bottle at her face twice.
