PHOENIX – Maricopa County Attorney Bill Montgomery will join with Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio in offering a reward for information leading to the arrest of the person responsible for shooting a Maricopa County Sheriff’s Deputy during a DUI enforcement traffic stop in Tempe on Saturday, May 7, 2016. The County Attorney will add $20,000 to the $20,000 previously offered by a private citizen, bringing the total reward to $40,000.
“The attack on this Deputy is an attack on our community,” said County Attorney Montgomery. “There was no interaction between the individual who fired the shots and the Deputy, which leads to the conclusion that the only reason for the shooting was the Deputy’s status as a law enforcement officer, and that cannot be tolerated. It will not be open season on law enforcement in Maricopa County,” Montgomery added.
The Deputy, a ten-year veteran of the MCSO, was struck twice in the leg at approximately 2:14 a.m. last Saturday. Officials stated the shooter was driving an older model Cadillac southbound on Price Road. Anyone with information about the incident is encouraged to call MCSO at (602) 876-1011.
The Maricopa County Attorney’s Office will use funds seized from criminal activity under the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations (RICO) Act to supplement the existing reward.
