PHOENIX, AZ (November 13, 2012) – Members of the public will be able to safely destroy unneeded documents containing personal information at a free event on Friday, November 16, 2012 at International Paper, 301 South 30th Street, Phoenix 85034. Sponsored by the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office in partnership with International Paper, this free Shred-A-Thon is part of the County Attorney’s ongoing commitment to combat identity theft.
The event will take place from 6:00am – 6:00pm. Shred up to five 13-gallon kitchen trash bags, or five “banker’s boxes” of documents per vehicle for free. Additional bags or boxes may be shredded for $3 each.
“Arizona ranks fourth in the nation for the number of consumer complaints about identity theft and we take this problem very seriously,” remarked Maricopa County Attorney Bill Montgomery. “We are pleased to partner with International Paper to offer citizens a free and easy way to destroy documents with personal information, which is one of the best ways to protect yourself against this crime,” he added.
The County Attorney’s Office encourages citizens to bring the following types of documents to the Shred-A-Thon:
- Tax returns older than 5 years
- Statements from banks and financial institutions
- Cancelled checks
- Paycheck stubs
- Credit card applications
- Unneeded medical records and billing statements
- Any other unneeded document that contains personal information
All shredding will take place on the premises of International Paper. Volunteers with the County Attorney’s Office will be available to assist with unloading bags from vehicles and to provide free brochures and information on preventing identity theft.
