Driving Drunk is Madness,
Don’t Count on the Luck of the Irish to Give you a Break

March brings warmer temperatures to the Valley. It’s the beginning of Spring and families in Maricopa County are heading outside to enjoy the perfect weather. We’ve got March Madness, spring training baseball, Spring Break, and St. Patrick’s Day to celebrate.

As you are planning your get-togethers at the ballpark, at home, a sports bar, or restaurant patio, make sure you plan ahead if alcohol is a part of those festivities.

With so many options for a safe ride—from rideshares, light rail, cabs or a designated driver—you can easily avoid getting behind the wheel if you’ve had any amount of alcohol.

And, we’re here to help. The Maricopa County Attorney’s Office has partnered with iHeart Media and Lyft to give you a discount code you can use for St. Patrick’s Day. On March 17, download the Lyft app and enter code “SafePHX” to receive a discount on rides.

Arizona has some of the toughest impaired driving laws in the country, carrying large fines and penalties that could result in jail or prison time, even if you’re a first-time offender. An $8-10 ride is much less expensive than a $10,000 fine and time in jail; or even worse, injuring or killing someone.

The MCAO Vehicular Crimes Bureau prosecutes crimes involving motor vehicle collisions and drivers who have left the scene of collisions involving injury. The 13 prosecutors and 13 administrative staff and paralegals assigned to this Bureau prosecuted more than 2,000 defendants last year involved in vehicular crimes such as DUI, helping to keep the roadways safe for you and your family.

“Plan ahead. Take a rideshare or travel with your designated driver so when it’s time to go home, your safe ride is already in place,” said Maricopa County Attorney Allister Adel.
