Litigation Practice Group, MCAO Civil Services Division represents Maricopa County and County agencies, elected Maricopa County officials such as the Board of Supervisors, County Attorney and Sheriff, and individual County employees in the course and scope of their employment, in connection with claims brought in state and federal courts.

Company Profile:
The Maricopa County Attorney's Office summer program offers an opportunity to intern with the Litigation Practice Group, MCAO Civil Services Division. The Litigation Practice Group will accept students who have completed either their 1L or 2L year. Students who have completed their 2L year will have the opportunity to be certified under Rule 38(d) if they meet the criteria set forth by the Arizona Supreme Court. The summer program will start with an orientation program in late May or early June and the program will conclude no earlier than the first week in August. Applicants for the program should include a resume, unofficial transcript and writing sample with their application. The Litigation Practice Group will interview out of state students via Skype.

Interns must successfully complete a criminal background investigation and a drug test prior to beginning the internship. Interns may not work in any other legal setting during the time of their internship with the Litigation Practice Group.

Program Description:
An internship with the Litigation Practice Group will give the law student an overview of the types of work performed by attorneys in civil litigation practice in the governmental setting. Students will receive experience in research and writing on civil litigation topics, including Section 1983 constitutional issues, state law tort issues, and state law contract issues. They also will receive experience in assisting in civil practice such as disclosure, written discovery, witness interviews, depositions, expert work, various types of motions, court hearings, trial assistance, and working on special projects and assignments within the Litigation Practice Group.

Hiring Criteria:
Open to students who have completed 1L and 2L. Must successfully complete a criminal background investigation and a drug test prior to beginning the internship. Interns may not work in any other legal setting during the time of their internship with the Litigation Practice Group.
