Become a Victim Services Volunteer Brochure (PDF) - As a Victim Witness Volunteer / Intern, you can aid victims in their recovery from crime, assist them in their efforts to seek justice and help ensure the criminal justice system is responsive to the rights of the victims.

Volunteers and interns must be 16 years of age, and must pass a criminal history background check, fingerprinting and drug test prior to placement. The volunteer/intern programs listed may have additional requirements for placement. Please contact the phone number listed for information regarding additional requirements.

Clerical Volunteers

Volunteers in this area help with filing, photocopying, file construction, data entry and the sorting and delivering of mail and documents.

Legal Assistant Volunteer/Intern Program

Paralegal students and most college/university students may be able to earn credit (if available through their course of study) for work in the Paralegal Division of the Maricopa County Attorney's Office. We accept students from pre-law, justice studies, political science, journalism, English, communications and other academic majors. Volunteers are always welcome. We have intern opportunities Monday through Saturday.

Opportunities for volunteers and interns are offered in the following areas:

  • Legal Research Motions/Pleadings/Brief Drafting
  • Witness Preparation
  • Interviews/Depositions
  • Hands-on Trial Preparation

Victim Services Evening Volunteer Program

The Evening Volunteer Program was implemented to assist victims who cannot be contacted during normal business hours. Volunteers in the program provide assistance and information to victims of various crimes through telephone contact. In addition, the volunteers provide case and criminal/juvenile justice information throughout the course of prosecution. The volunteers are expected to check the welfare of the victims and make any necessary social service referrals. The Evening Volunteer Program operates from 5:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

Victim Services Volunteer/Intern Program

College students may be able to earn credit (if available through their course of study) for work in the Victim Services Division of the Maricopa County Attorney's Office. Volunteers are also needed. Volunteers and interns are needed to:

  • inform victims of their rights and what to expect throughout the criminal or juvenile justice process;
  • provide emotional support;
  • address the concerns that victims may have about their case and their participation in prosecution;
  • provide victims information regarding restitution;
  • accompany victims to court to help them understand the proceedings;
  • provide information and referrals to community and social service agencies in order to meet the victim's need for compensation, counseling or other assistance;
  • provide information by telephone about the status of the victim's case;
  • assist victims with property return, the task of scheduling pretrial interviews and notification of court dates; and
  • act as a liaison between the victim and the Deputy County Attorney and other criminal justice professionals.
