Gangs

The Gangs Bureau aggressively investigates and prosecutes Criminal Street Gangs, which are defined as ongoing formal or informal associations of persons whose members or associates individually or collectively engage in the commission, attempted commission, facilitation or solicitation of any felony act.

As a rule, Criminal Street Gang members and/or Repeat Offenders generally are not eligible for diversion or probation.  Because of the danger to citizens posed by these offenders, they are typically sentenced to substantial sentences in the Arizona Department of Corrections.

Gang activity frequently involves a wide range of crimes, from vandalism, graffiti and burglary to rape, assault and even murder.  The Maricopa County Attorney’s Office offers a free Gang Violence brochure with information on warning signs of gang activity as well as resources for victims and neighborhoods.
